XP > Change internet protocol “IP”.
By 888 | November 28, 2008
Hello friends and neighbors. A belated happy thanksgiving to y’all.
Just wondering … how many of you still use Windows XP? I do… and I know my days are limited but thanks to Microsoft they did extend updates for XP.
The other day a co-worker asked me “how do I change my ip address?” My initial thought must have been negative because I wondered why anyone wants to know how to change their ip address. Are they trying to hide themselves online? Are they up to no good? If they are, what are they doing? Too far! I should not want to go there.
“Which operating system are you on, Rich?”, I asked. “XP”, says Rich. “I don’t know right off hand but let me look into it and I’ll get back to you later.”
First stop for me was Google, obviously, and one of their top results for “change ip address” was
none other than the Microsoft networking expert Charlie Russel.
This article was helpful for me so I wanted to pass it to you Rich and to others. Pay no attention to the fact it is 6 almost seven years old. It works.
For some reason if you can’t find “network connections”, hit your start button and bring up your programs list. Look up top on the right for “my network places” instead. Look at the menu on the left under Network Tasks. You should find a link labeled “view network connections.” This opens “Network Connection.”
What you see in here will most likely depend on how you connect to your network meaning a dsl line vs a cable connection or even a wireless connection. You should see a line showing your information broken into a few catagories: name – type – status – device name – phone number or host address – owner.
Clicking the line of “name” info should initiate a utility box popup giving general information and access to support from your machine.
This is not the only way to view your ip address and to make manual changes. There is a way using your DOS command promt to do this also. Personally I am not that familiar with DOS so I won’t even try to go there.
Do an online search in any search engine for “change ip dos” and you should find the steps, somewhere.
That’s it, Rich. Oh and thanks for asking me. Happy Thanksgiving everone. Have a nice holiday/ vacation. Soon it’ll be time to go back to work (school for you young uns) and start getting ready for Christmas. Have a good one!
(P.S.)
The best part I liked about Charlie Russel’s article was where he warns anyone wanting to manually change their ip address they should first know how to reverse whatever they do. I don’t know if he used those exact words but the meaning is clear to me. =)
